Sam Johnson, Product Design, 2010

Studying at Derby

Sam Johnson landed his dream job as a Junior Designer working for global brand LEGO, based at the company’s headquarters in Denmark, after graduating from the BA (Hons) Product Design degree course.

Sam said: "Studying the course at the University of Derby helped me develop a very good understanding of the design process and CAD software. Plus I learnt new skills in drawing, rendering and presentation which resulted in me landing my childhood dream job as a Junior Designer after graduation.

A career with LEGO

"I began working for LEGO and just one year later was promoted from Junior Designer to the position of Designer which was awesome! I have two LEGO City models that I designed on shelves worldwide, LEGO City Ambulance (4431) and Police Dog Van (4441) with another four to follow."

Sam said: "I was quite young when I told my parents that I wanted to be a toy designer for LEGO.  I even sent a letter to the company asking how I could become a LEGO designer and got a letter back with a list of qualifications I would need."

As part of his BA (Hons) Product Design degree, Sam’s final year work was on display at the New Designers exhibition in London which and was noticed and highly praised by a senior LEGO employee.

Other LEGO company delegates were equally impressed by his portfolio, and Sam was invited for an interview which took two days and involved workshops in LEGO design, drawing and building used to test the candidate's skills and imagination. He was also interviewed by two of LEGO's Creative Directors before being offered the position of Junior Designer.
