"The simple fact is that studying at Derby was a pivotal part of my journey" Ben Kouijzer

What are you doing now?

I am a music agent at United Talent Agency. We are a premier global talent and literary agency with offices in Beverley Hills, New York, London, LA, Nashville, Toronto, Miami, and Malmo.  We represent many of the world's most acclaimed figures in motion pictures, television, music, digital, broadcast news, theatre, video games, books, fine art and live entertainment.

Our music roster is diverse and includes clients such as Muse, Foals, Kanye West, Motorhead, Jungle, Chvrches, Craig David, Dolly Parton, Roger Sanchez and Status Quo.

What were the main reasons you took that course?

I always knew that I’d find happiness working in music, but at 18 years of age, I had no idea where I’d fit into that world. I took the course because it offered a range of learning experience, from the things I thought I’d love, to the things I thought I’d hate. It turns out some of the things you wouldn’t choose to do end up being the most beneficial.

Why did you choose to study the course at the University of Derby?

At the time there weren’t many universities offering this course in the UK. Derby was also one of few universities that actually seemed to understand the International Baccalaureate (which I’d studied at College in Spain). Having been born just outside of Nottingham, Derby felt pretty close to home.

What impact has studying this course at Derby had on your career?

The simple fact is that studying at Derby was a pivotal part of my journey towards where I am today. I wouldn’t be where I am today without it. These were formative years for me, I grew up at the University of Derby, I learnt how to learn, I learnt how to manage myself and my time, I learnt a great deal. That’s not to say I didn’t have fun!

Our music roster is diverse and includes clients such as Muse, Foals, Kanye West, Motorhead, Jungle, Chvrches, Craig David, Dolly Parton, Roger Sanchez and Status Quo.

How did the lecturers inspire you?

I’m always inspired by people with knowledge who are willing to share it.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?

Go for it – you have every tool at your disposal at the University to help you on your way to doing whatever you want to do, wherever you want to do it. It’s up to you to make the most of it.

Who are you still in touch with from University of Derby?

Many of the friends I made at Derby are friends for life and now live in London. Others are now spread out across the globe and we keep in touch via social media. Oh, and you guys of course! (otherwise this interview wouldn’t be possible).
