How an MBA can help you get ahead in business

Writer: Jeremy Swan

Neil Cufley recently completed his MBA with the University of Derby Online Learning and says the course helped him to make the transition from serving soldier to Director of Operations at an independent school.

If you’re looking to take the next step in your career, then an MBA (Master of Business Administration) postgraduate qualification could help you achieve your goals.

That’s what former soldier Neil Cufley found when he left the army to pursue a career in management.

“Initially I considered the MBA purely for my own professional development”, says Neil, “and the improvements it might have on the multitude of strategic decisions that formed part of my daily life as a manager.

“My early working life was spent as a soldier, initially in military intelligence and more latterly in logistics. Having served for two decades in the Army, I decided that it was time for a change and began looking for a different career.

“I was fortunate to become the Director of Operations at an independent school in the South East of England, with business management at the heart of my new career. Early on in my new appointment I realised that I had the bulk of the experience and knowledge to succeed, but I wanted to take my learning to the next level cementing my previous learning and experiences and I saw this as being an option through an MBA.”

The MBA is recognised around the world as the primary leadership and management qualification. It’s a mark that shows you have the strategic knowledge, insight and understanding to succeed in business management.

Our new MBA Global and MBA Global Finance have been developed to give you the strategic knowledge to challenge, innovate and lead change within your organisation. There are a number of ways to study the MBA Global at the University of Derby. You can study full-time, part-time or online, so you can fit your studies around your lifestyle. The course takes one year to complete if you study full-time but you can spread your learning over two or three years for greater flexibility

There are other benefits too, says Gino Franco, Programme Leader for the part-time MBA:

“In the modern business environment of 2016 the only certainty is continual change and modern managers need to be flexible, adaptable and able to stay ahead in this complex and competitive world.”
