Young Engineers Design Challenge 2010

Engineering

In July 2010 we hosted the annual Young Engineers and Scientists of Derbyshire (YESD) Design Challenge

An exciting day

The aim of the competition is to allow young people to participate in engineering as part of their Science Technology and Engineering studies.  It's a fun and challenging day of practical, hands-on activity that enables them to try out new ideas and to put into practice skills and theories taught during their normal studies.

The competition has the support of many engineering companies and related organisations, including Rolls Royce and Bombardier.

This year's challenge

The title of this year's challenge was Red Planet Rescue.

The object was to design and build a vehicle to transport a quantity of fuel across the surface of Mars to a stricken base to allow the astronauts there to return to Earth. Students were given a hypothetical budget, and various tools and materials were provided.

Competitive spirit

The students worked together in teams and competed to win prizes for innovation, imagination and enthusiasm for engineering and they were judged throughout the day on elements including designing and making skills, communication and performance.
