19 March 2012

Built Environment research Group
Cover of Issue 1 of the Journal of Biourbanism

JBU aims to play a leading role where research workers and scholars, from several fields including mathematics, physics, biology, neurophysiology, architecture and urbanism, can contribute to a better urban environment and a future full of hope for humankind

Dr Antonio Caperna, President of the International Society of Biourbanism

Following on from the successful launch of the first issue of this new journal edited by Eleni Tracada, Director of the Built Environment Research Group, here is the call for the second issue.

Starting from the definition by the World Health Organization, in which, "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity," we would like to introduce the Biourbanism scientific approach, according to which, human wellbeing and the quality of urban environment in general demonstrate a strong relationship with geometrical coherence. This may link Biourbanism to life sciences and, as a general rule, to open new research perspectives, bringing out the possible socio-economical, political, and biological / neurophysiological impact of architecture, urban design and urban planning on human wellbeing.

Authors are invited to offer their contribution on the exploration of the relationships and/or effects of design (being revealed as architecture, urbanism, sculpture, etc.) on one or more points of the following:

Human wellbeing, in term of physical health, psychology, physiology and biology;

  • Geometrical order and living environment;
  • Sociology and the socio-geometry in urban environment;
  • Bioeconomy;
  • Urban Policies;
  • Biophilic design, as therapeutic environment;
  • Morphogenesis, as biocompatible environment.
