The University of Derby is privileged to receive this fascinating exhibition "Types for the New Century" an exhibition curated by Will Hill for the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers.

The exhibition is displayed at the impressive Faculty of Arts, Design and Technology building at Markeaton Street, Derby and is of particular interest to students on our degree courses in graphic design, art, media, journalism, engineering, architecture and product design.

Typographical design with it's essential combination of aesthetics and functionality is particularly relevant to the 21st century context of the city of Derby, which is one of the fastest growing technological cities in Europe and is an opportunity to see how the design of typefaces has developed and influences our contemporary society.

As Will Hill writes in the excellent catalogue, which accompanies the exhibition, "Typographic information permeates our lives more continuously, across a greater range of contexts, than at any time in history"

The exhibition shows how typefaces are being designed and adapted for the fast changing and practical demands of printed media such as newspapers and books, to the web and other digital platforms such as mobile phones and ipads.

The examples of contemporary typeface designs are incredibly diverse and illustrate how designers draw from a surprisingly wide range of cultural, social and visual influences from the radical forms of the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber and the F-117 Nighthawk Stealth Strike Aircraft to the music of the Spanish band Ojos de Brujo.
