Featuring the artists in residence on the AA2A scheme and selected works from Banks Mill Studios

Artists on AA2A scheme: Valerie Dalling, Stevie Davies and Veronica West.

Valerie Dalling

SILENCE forms the first part of an ongoing project 'Between friends', as a visual artist Dalling uses photography to capture the thoughts and feelings of Tracy, a friend who has undergone treatment for breast cancer, following her diagnosis in 2010.

Stevie Davies

Construction and manipulation techniques are key to Stevie's fused glass practice. All work is designed and handmade by layering sheets of glass with wire details, which Stevie first creates by using manipulation techniques including wrapping, crotchet and lace. These layers of metal inclusions add texture within the glass, and additional colour is added with further wire work after firing.

Veronica West

The prints on show have been made through the use of solar plate printing methods, and the use of laser-cutting techniques to 'bite' into acrylic plates. They are part of West's research into the parallels between the working processes employed by artists, and the spontaneous approaches of children to making, particularly in the early pre-school period.

The selected artists from Banks Mill are: Angelika Dennis, Ewan Mathers and Louise West.

Artists Access to Art Colleges (AA2A) is a national scheme, providing visual artists and designer makers with the opportunity to undertake a period of research or realise a project; using university workshops and supporting facilities. The participating artists and makers have the opportunity to use equipment which otherwise might not be available to them, as well as benefiting the institution by bringing in ideas and techniques which may not otherwise enter the university environment.

Banks Mill Studios is a vibrant and thriving community of artists providing workspace studios for a diverse range of creative franchises, including fine art, photography and design. A selection of work will be exhibited at Markeaton Street to showcase the variety of creative work being produced at Banks Mill.

Curators: Scott Green and Jayne Falconer
