Why would you recommend that students should do the DPP? It definitely helps you to get a job when you leave and you can see the difference in your final year between those students who have and have not been on a DPP year - they seem to have more confidence.

GIRLSWEAR WORK

Where did you do your placement?

I did 2 placements during the DPP year:

Before the DPP I started off at George doing my Professional Development module which was for 4 weeks - they only offered 2 week placements which I did and got on there really well.

I worked in Girls wear and helped with design drawings for their Christmas dress range - some of my designs went into production and were selected for the main editorial for their collection.

I was thinking about doing the DPP year so I asked them if they had any longer term placements - they had a graduate scheme but took my details.

In the meantime I worked at Zara for 2 months as a Visual Merchandiser - this is something I also wanted to try alongside designing.  I worked at the Derby store for 2 months; we liaised with Spain (Head Office) who sent through the themes /stories and plans for the displays. We then worked out from the collections we had in store how to merchandise and display / adapt the story themes sent through.  I enjoyed the role and it involved lots of early mornings but I knew that after doing this I wanted to focus on being a designer.

Shortly after I had a call from George at ASDA HR letting me know they had a job vacancy for an Assistant Designer - I applied for this, the interview was a 3 stage process and I had to do research (competitor analysis), designs and present my work as part of the interview.

I was successful and got the job so was able to do my DPP with them - I worked on Jersey wear and liaised with the buying team, undertook research, range planning, Produced Design specifications into design sheets and fabric references.  As I was there for a year I got to work on 2 full seasons A/W and S/S

Why did you do the DPP?

I wanted to try different jobs so I could see what it would be like at work and what I enjoyed doing.

What did you learn while on your placement?

I had the chance to experience so much whilst on my placement including being fully involved in the design process.  The other great thing about working at George was that they put all staff on training programmes to use Photoshop and Illustrator - this really improved my skills and I now have a work experience portfolio including my collections and CAD drawings to show potential employers.

What did you like about the DPP?

It gave me the chance to experience different jobs and find out what I did and didn't like doing and where I felt my skills best fit.  I definitely know I want to be a designer going forward.

Why would you recommend that students should do the DPP?

It definitely helps you to get a job when you leave and you can see the difference in your final year between those students who have and have not been on a DPP year - they seem to have more confidence.

Do you have any tips?

Yes start applying early and send off examples of visuals and some artwork not just a CV so people can see your work.
