Lauren Attenborough - Fashion
Lauren chose to take the
Diploma in Professional Practice (DPP) as part of her study route on the BA (Hons) Fashion Studies course.
Where did you do your placement?
As part of my 4 week work placement module in year 2 I went to
Chilwell School to work as an Art & Design assistant. I worked with the teachers assisting in the classroom delivering all art, design and technology related sessions.
I then decided I wanted to do the DPPP t get more work experience in different jobs. I went to work for L.S Manufacturing in Wolverhampton who are a family run business who make for companies such as Aquascutum, Fred Perry and Barber. I worked as Assistant in Line Production which gave me a lot of good experience as I got to learn about the whole production process including:
-
Pattern Cutting
-
Making Pattern Alternations
-
Cutting out samples
-
Sourcing components such as buttons, zips, finishes
I put these together for the sample machinist to make up samples for the clients to approve or make changes to the sample garments pre production.
This was initially a temporary position but the company offered me a longer term role - unfortunately as I had to commuting from Derby to Wolverhampton everyday it was not practical for me in the longer term as I was could not afford to relocate.
I decided to get back in touch with
Chilwell School to see if I could do an extended teaching placement with them. I was able to get a placement there and started off delivering taster session in textiles and fashion to GCSE and A level students.
This led onto to do further session in technology and Product Design. Whilst I was there I started to support one of the teachers more by leading in a GCSE Fashion project where I would assist with classroom delivery, session planning marking of work. This led onto me working with the students to put on a final year fashion show.
Why did you do the DPP?
I wanted to try different things and it gave me a chance to see if I like teaching which is not something I had considered at the beginning fo my course but I now know I want to do.
What did you learn while on your placement?
I did 2 very different placements one in a teaching environment and the other in a production environment where I got see garments made from start to finish and be involved in the whole process.
What did you like about the DPP?
Doing the DPP gave me such good experience within the school that I have now applied to do my PGCE at the end fo my degree which means I can then go onto teaching. There were only 20 places on the PGCE course but because I had gained such valuable experience in etching whilst on my DPP they have offered me a place.
Why would you recommend that students should do the DPP?
It really helped me to decide on my career and my future and helped me to see what skills I had and what type of work I really wanted to do in the future.
Do you have any tips?
Be prepared to help when you are on your placement or DPP and it will open up all sorts of opportunities to you, the more experience you get the better.
