Where did you do your placement?

I did my initial 4 week placement at Top Shop in their design studio as I wanted to experience working within design and the process involved.  I worked with the Casual Wear Team and the Kate Moss Team doing everything from shop reports, researching and designing trims.  I found it to be a very fast moving environment and I was not sure if it was for me.  Whist there I was asked to get involved in a Top Shop advertising campaign where I went to assist with styling a photo shoot - I found this really inspiring and felt it was something I wanted to do more of.

Why did you do the DPP?

I knew after doing my 4 week placement I wanted to do the DPP as I realised how much more I was going to learn from being in industry.

Following my experience at the Top Shop shoot I decided to look for opportunities to assist with photography and styling and offered to help on a voluntary basis.  By chance a friend introduced me to a contact they had who was a freelance stylist.

Her name is Susie Coulthard  and I went to assist her on a music video preparing and souring clothes for dancers and extras.  Shortly afterwards I was asked to help out on a day long shoot for the Rita Ora video, I liked the pace of work and liked the diverse range of people I got to work with and decided this was something I wanted to do more of.

I started to look for other opportunities to support freelance stylists and was recommended by other stylists.   I started to work on a project in Birmingham for a local photographer and from that got involved in styling for a pre fashion show at a Rhianna concert at LG Arena - where I organised all the dancers and models.

After this I continued to make contacts and I worked freelance with photographers assisting models in styling for their portfolios.  Throughout my DPP year I was able to really make some great industry contacts with film makers / video producer's photographers and other stylists and was asked by one of my contacts to be in the Plan B video.

What did you learn while on your placement?

It gave me the chance to realise what I enjoyed doing and gave me a great opportunity to get out and meet people and make contacts and build up my experience and portfolio.

After uni I would love to continue working freelance, however I have enjoyed film production and all the processes involved so much I would love to gain a little more experience in this area and perhaps in art direction even!

What did you like about the DPP?

This business is all about getting out there and creating your own opportunities and making contact with people.

It helped me focus on what I wanted to do for my final year project which was inspired by experience on the DPP.

I have directed, produced and styled a short fashion styling film as part of my independent study (individual project). After gaining experience within film and music video production, I decided to get a team together to aid me in creating something visual striking. I used a professional dancer & model who I met in London to be the main feature of my film, and the theme I based the set and styling on was what under the sea, from nature, to the shapes of the waters current, to the dangerous features of certain creatures.

Why would you recommend that students should do the DPP?

It gives you so much more confidence.

Do you have any tips?

Take every opportunity you get as you never know where it will lead you next!
