Whilst on the DPP I also started a small business making accessories from the waste that I'd acquired working at Somitex because they dispose of lots of materials. This developed into a business idea which I then carried into my final collection.

Erica chose to take the Diploma in Professional Practice (DPP)as part of her study route on the BA (Hons) Fashion Studies

What is the the DPP?

This course gives you the opportunity to go on a gap year to gain work experience whilst you're on your degree course. This will allow you to gain the skills and relevant work experience employers in your industry are looking for, enhancing your employment prospects when you graduate.

This is an additional qualification that will sit between the second and final year of your degree offering valuable experience in the workplace whilst on your work placement.

Where did you the DPP?

Somitex in Hucknall, a childrenswear supplier supplying to the high street.

What did you do while on your DPP?

I worked alongside one of the designers assisting her.  I was also given my own roles throughout the year which included:

  • Designing
  • Pattern cutting
  • Production responsibilities

Whilst on the DPP I also started a small business making accessories from the waste that I'd acquired working at Somitex because they dispose of lots of materials.  This developed into a business idea which I then carried into my final collection.

I have also been busy with my website www.oddlyenough.co.uk  where the items are displayed for sale.  My final collection is a marketing tool to promote the accessories.  I have been offered a position with Somitex after graduating and will carry on with my business whilst working there.

Would you recommend the DPP other students?

I feel you mature as a person whilst on the DPP and leave University with a years experience in the industry so immediately you have a head start, you also may be offered a position on graduating.

What did you get out of the doing the DPP?

A job and a business!  Time to have a go at things and see what you prefer doing and the opportunity to work in a professional environment.
