Those debating whether to take a placement shouldn't even think twice! It is the most beneficial thing, not only for yourself but in increases your chance of future employment. They should not think that they just want to rush through University as it gives students a gap in studies to grow and I feel it has increased my chances of getting a first due to my improved computer and design skills

What is the DPP?
This course gives you the opportunity to go on a gap year to gain work experience whilst you're on your degree course. This will allow you to gain the skills and relevant work experience employers in your industry are looking for, enhancing your employment prospects when you graduate.
This is an additional qualification that will sit between the second and final year of your degree offering valuable experience in the workplace whilst on your work placement.
Where did you do the DPP?
I went on placement with Neil Morten from GMP Design and I got so much out of the placement.
What did you do whilst on your DPP?
I was thrown in at the deep end as soon as I arrived and was given a project, I worked on:
-
Space planning
-
Detail packages
-
Mood Boards
-
Visualisations
Once the initial visuals were ready I sent these through to our
Why would you recommend the DPP to other students?
I feel that taking a placement is a vital learning curve for students. University studies are nothing like the real life experience and part of me feels it should be compulsory. If I was a second year student again I would still take up the opportunity to have a placement. It is very insightful of what your future will be and to make sure it is really suited to you. Myself and others on my course did not fully understand what our role would be once leaving University, and I think going on placement opens up exactly what you would be doing.

What did you personally get out of doing the DPP?
Taking the year out helped me evolve as a person and use and improve the skills that I have learnt at University. I have already at the age of 21 managed to design and space plan a branded bar. Those that do not go on a placement year will not have this experience of which first time employers will be looking for. I was offered to return to GMP after I have finished my final year, or if I decided not to return to them they said they would help me in getting a job through references.
