Semta (Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies in the UK) has been successful in securing funding from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills' Employer Investment Fund to support SMEs in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering to employ graduates.

Currently only 15% of SMEs in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering employ graduates, Semta's ambition is to see this rise to 17% over the next three years.

To qualify for the £1,000 grant, companies need to hire a graduate into full time employment (within the advanced manufacturing and engineering sector), graduates must start on or after 1st October for a minimum of 3 months.

To find out more on how to claim these grants, please contact Louise Adam l.adam@derby.ac.uk or call 01332 593 901

Thinking about taking on a placement student?

In these times of economic downturn many firms are considering cutting down on their biggest expense - their workforce.  However, by putting a freeze on recruitment you may be saving money in the short term but you could be leaving your company dangerously underskilled.

One creative solution to this could be to take on a placement student. Here are some frequently asked questions which will help you:

What are the benefits to me and my company?

  • You'll save on recruitment costs
  • You'll have a young, willing and able student on your team
  • Our students bring their current knowledge with them
  • They'll have up to date knowledge of the youth market, which is vital to a lot of organisations
  • You'll improve your links with the University, which can provide all kinds of opportunities that can help your business

How do I go about organising a placement?

  • To begin with, contact Louise Adam  (01332 593109) the Faculty Employability Coordinator for Arts, Design and Technology. You can discuss the vacancy with her and we'll advertise it on our web based jobs board for you.
  • Students can apply directly to your company, or Louise can collect the CVs and then send them on to you after the closing date has passed
  • You'll then be able to interview the candidates and select the best person for the role

Will I get to choose the student?

  • Yes - you'll interview the students and select the best candidate for the role
  • Only interested students will apply - there'll be no timewasters

What if it isn't working out?

  • We'll work with you to resolve the issue

Can I offer them a job at the end?

  • Yes - they can stay on with you and perhaps complete their degree part time
  • Alternatively, you can offer them a position for when they graduate
