Cycling to the Derby Campus - Travelling to the Derby Campus - University of Derby

Travelling by bicycle

Cycling is an excellent, healthy way of getting around Derby and we benefit from many good local cycle routes.

If you need help with route planning, you can obtain a cycle map from Cycle-Derby or alternatively from reception at Kedleston Road or Markeaton Street.

All of our teaching sites have free bicycle parking, most of which is covered by CCTV. At Markeaton Street we have a contained shelter and at Kedleston Road, the bike parking between B and T Block affords good shelter from the elements.

We also have shower facilities to freshen up which are located in:

  • Kedleston Road: T Block, Gym
  • Markeaton Street: Green Room

Cycle security

We have a good security record for cycling, however, its always good to lock your bike securely! Heavy duty bike D locks can be obtained from the Security Office at a subsidised rate.

We have a limited number of bicycle lockers at Kedleston Road which accomodate most bikes. Keys for these are issued on a strictly daily basis from security reception on a first come first serve system.

Bike Back Derby recycled bike sales

Bike back Derby is an innovative project run by cycling charity, Life Cycle UK. They take donations of unwanted bikes and refurbish them. The bikes are then available for staff and students to buy through periodic sales taking place in the Atrium at Kedleston Road.

There's also be a cycle mechanic attending the sales who will provide:

  • Free mechanical checks for exisitng cycle users
  • A tailored fitting service for anyone purchasing a Bike Back Derby bike.
  • A full repairs service

All bicycles come with a guarantee. There is the possibility of returning the bikes to the project at the end of your time at university - thus "re-recycling".

Sales are planned during term time. You can also book your bike maintenance in advance of the events.

We'll be holding bike sales on these dates:

  • Tuesday 27 September 2016
  • Tuesday 18 October 2016
  • Tuesday 22 November 2016
  • Tuesday 13 December 2016

Bike User Group

If you want to get actively involved the Bike User Group exists to help promote cycling to and from University by hosting events, campaigning on cycling issues and helping those who want to get into cycling by providing a free 'bike buddy' service on request (ie. one of us will ride with you to University if you are uncertain of routes, etc)

Tim Peacock (part of the Bike User Group) gives a great advert for cycling to University based on his personal experiences.

Tim Peacock - Why I cycle
