The University signed up to be a member of the Athena SWAN Charter in March 2014. The Charter is a scheme which recognises excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) employment in Higher Education. The Charter was launched in June 2005. Any university or research institution which is committed to the advancement and promotion of the careers of women in STEMM in Higher Education and research can apply for membership.
Here at the University of Derby our mission is to Inspire, Innovate and Impact; ensuring that our learners have a 'best in class' student experience. We believe that engaged employees are key in achieving our strategic aims, increasing performance and are vital for the future success of our University.
Understanding and embracing equality, diversity and inclusion will ensure that our students and employees feel safe, respected and valued.
We are pleased to be members as the Athena SWAN Charter fits well with the University's values and we believe it will provide us with a useful tool to benchmark our progress, enabling female academics to fulfil their potential and act as role models across the University and externally. We want to ensure we attract and retain female talent in all areas of the University, but especially in the STEMM areas, so that we support our talented female academics to have a fulfilling, sustainable career.
