Putting our students at the heart of everything we do

Teaching and learning

We offer high quality, value for money, choice, and our unique selling point; education with the personal touch. We truly believe in putting our students at the heart of everything we do and our students benefit from smaller class sizes, a personal tutor and excellent levels of support.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching and the fact that it is informed by our research and closely linked to the world of work. We continue to develop our teaching so it continues to be as innovative, stimulating and engaging as possible and meets the highest standards as demanded by today’s students.

The new and dynamic Department of Learning Enhancement was created early to work with academic staff and ensure a high quality student focused learning experience. Learning Enhancement supports and drives teaching developments, and embeds learning technologies throughout our programmes.

Real world learning

Our focus is on real world learning – preparing students for the world of work by giving them the theory and letting them put it into practice in our state of the art facilities.

That’s why we have a simulated hospital and working radiography suite; industry standard kitchens and a fine dining restaurant; computer games suites; a commercial spa and salon; a law court and sports science gym, a 58 acre Outdoor Leadership Centre and our own working theatre.

Our students gain real world experience through short and long term placements in high quality companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Porsche, Asda, Bentley, DHL, Renault, TNT, Accenture, Lubrizol, Rolls-Royce, Toyota, PriceWaterhouse Cooper, primary schools, hospitals, and the University itself.

Derby courses

We offer a wide range of higher education and further education courses and we pioneered online learning with over 30 online courses currently on offer.

Derby has specialised in teaching arts, design and technology subjects and training teachers since the early 1900s. This tradition continues today and we now also offer courses in business, computing, law, health, the sciences, and courses relating to the leisure industries.

We are also one of the few universities to offer a Joint Honours Scheme, allowing students to study two or three subjects instead of just one.

Our online learning courses give you the flexibility to study alongside your work or personal commitments. Delivered in a structured and supported online environment by dedicated online tutors with content you can access at any time via the internet through your computer or mobile device. Choose from a range of degrees in business and management, healthcare, psychotherapy, education, hospitality, psychology and environmental sciences.

Defining new learning spaces: physical and virtual

Our students are also experiencing a completely different classroom environment with the introduction of several high tech learning spaces in Derby and Buxton. Spaces have been reconfigured from a pedagogic perspective to create more collaborative active learning and teaching environments. Multiple wireless PC points, glass walls that double as white boards and flexible furniture all help stimulate a more engaging learning experience for our students and staff.
