About the course

Organisations are facing increasing demands to respond quickly and effectively to internal and external change. The ability for your operational managers to engage with and enable others to react to these demands is critical. Budgets are tighter and greater efficiencies have to be achieved, so creative thinking and innovative behaviours need to be encouraged and developed to ensure that strategic visions become a reality.

This programme supports your operational managers to develop practical skills, competencies, values and experience to deal more effectively with these workplace challenges.

It will:

  • Provide them with the opportunity to develop key management, team development,  coaching, communication, problem solving and project management skills.
  • Encourage them to identify and reflect upon the principles and practices of effective management.
  • Assist them to identify and prioritise their own learning and management development.
  • Enable them to evaluate and reflect on their own practice in the principles of management in relation to their individual work based context.

It's a work based programme which means that learners study part time and apply everything they learn to current organisational issues through projects and assignments. This brings real value to your organisation and supports the personal and career development of your employees. The programme structure provides an overarching framework, whilst the content can be customised to meet your organisations aims and objectives.

The programme consists of two modules:

Personal Development Planning (20 credits)
Learners will reflect on their own and others' behaviour in order to develop self awareness. They will examine, diagnose and articulate their personal and professional development needs within the context of their workplace environment so that existing skills and knowledge can be identified and consolidated, and so new strategies for the effective application of knowledge, skills and understanding in the workplace can be developed.

Work Based Project: Beginning Work Based Enquiry (40 credits)
This module brings together the learner's knowledge of their own area of professional practice and the skills to begin a work-based enquiry into issues of professional interest and concern in the workplace, and to report these in a manner consistent with the demands of higher education.

With support from their organisation, learners will select a work issue that is of professional and personal development interest to them, as well as of benefit to the organisation. The learner will then creatively design, research and hopefully implement a work-based project and presenting their findings, own ideas or new information as part of their investigation.

Key areas of study that may underpin the work-based project include:

  • Planning - aims, objectives, models and theories
  • Managing projects - key tools and methodologies
  • Communication in the workplace - models, theories, approach
  • Decision-making - processes, models, setting priorities
  • Researching and using secondary sources
  • Ethical considerations
  • Analysing and presenting data
  • Harvard referencing skills.

How you'll learn

This programme consists of six one-day workshops which can be delivered at your organisation or at the University of Derby's Enterprise Centre. These sessions introduce and explore concepts, topics and issues that matter to your business in the development of your operational managers. They often include group work, case studies and analysis of organisational materials.

Learning continues in the workplace through conceptualising their experience and developing understanding that directly relates to their workplace setting. This learning provides learners with the opportunity to reflect, review and adjust their current practices, involving analysis, and the application of thoughts and ideas.
